Over Population and Increasing Urban Populations – The VR Solution Considered

Lance Winslow asked:

There are so many mega cities in the World and it is estimated that over the next few decades over 50-60% of the World’s population will live in urban areas. Will these urban areas support that many humans? We are talking about five to six billion people. Ah ha, now I’ve got your attention I see.

Well, what about the virtual reality solution, where people live close together but each of the walls of their personal space is like a flat screen TV and they can project any image they wish, or any amount of infinite space? This VR environment has been proposed, and would be very good for concentrated areas.

It could also be used for living underground in times of let’s say a 1,000 years of Earth Surface cataclysmic events that would not support life as we know it. It might be very good for space colonies, or long-term space travel.

It also lends itself well to allowing humans to live their fulfilled life to its natural end without procreating and increasing population on a planet slowly running out of resources. A large group or a small group of humans could isolate themselves to start another type of society or civilization based on some other format not currently used.

Many of these types of isolate groups could test the best possible type of society and civilization for humans, which could propel long-term species continuance. Whereas, a current system of government, society, and civilization might find itself ending of its own device or mistakes, so perhaps you might think about it.

George Lucas

Suthin Liptawat asked:

Most people associate George Lucas with Star Wars but for me, he is always associated with my favorite surround sound system, THX. Currently in the state where I live there is not a movie theater that has the THX sound system.

George Walton Lucas. Jr. is one of the most financially successful independent film director and producers. He became famous for creating the epic Star Wars saga and together with his friend Steven Spielberg, the popular Indiana Jones trilogy. I am eagerly waiting to see the fourth Indiana Jones. I hope Harrison Ford will not show his age.

George Lucas was a four-time Academy Award(Oscar) nominee as director, producer and screenwriter. On June 9, 2005 he was awarded the Life Achievement Award by the American Film Institute.

He was raised on a walnut ranch at Modesto, California. His parents sold retail office supplies. He attended Modesto Junior College before enrolling at the University of California film school. He is married to Maria Lou Griffin, a film editor who won an Oscar for the Film Star Wars Episode IV.

He made a short film THX-1138 which won the first prize at the 1967-68 National Student Film Festival. He was then awarded a scholarship by Warner brothers to observe the making of Finian’s Rainbow which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Then they became good friends and formed a company called American Zoetrope in 1969. The full version of his film THX-1138 was the fist project of the company.

Coppola went on to produce of the Godfather in 1972 and Lucas formed his own company called Lucasfilm. His second film was American Grafitti which won a Golden Globe award and garnered 5 Oscar nominations. Then in 1973-74 he began writing the screenplay for Star Wars. The next year he established the Industrial Light and Magic due to special effects needed for the movie. Star Wars then became a box office hit and won seven Academy Awards. And the rest was history.

I am eagerly waiting to see his fourth collaboration, Indiana Jones, with Steven Spielberg. I hope Harrison Ford will not show his age in this movie.

Seinfeld – A Show About Nothing with Something For Everyone

Andrew Regan asked:

Jerry Seinfeld, a New York-born stand-up comedian, had little interest in doing a TV show when he was approached in 1988 by American TV channel NBC to attend a creative meeting. Unhappy with his small recurring role on the TV show ‘Benson’, he felt like it was a limited medium and not right for his brand of comedy. He had already appeared several times on the ‘Tonight Show’ with Johnny Carson and on a Rodney Dangerfield HBO special, giving him enough publicity to make a living of the touring comedy circuit.

Nevertheless, after some negotiation with NBC, Jerry agreed that he and good friend and fellow comedian Larry David would create a pilot for a TV show blurring the lines of reality and fiction, showing footage of Seinfeld performing his act in between scenes from a fictionalized version of his life, thereby expanding upon, or showing how Seinfeld got the inspiration for his act.

Initial reactions to the pilot were bad. People claimed it was too Jewish, too New York and ironically enough, too appealing to young adults. Nevertheless, Rick Ludwin, Seinfeld’s champion at NBC got the show commissioned for an additional 4 episodes. These episodes were highly rated as they were broadcast after ‘Cheers’, and the show was commissioned for a second season of 12 episodes, slowly becoming a cult hit with late-night TV audiences and breaking into the Nielsen Ratings Top 30 by season 4.

Ostensibly a show about nothing, apart from the footage of Jerry on stage, the show relied heavily on dialogue and sly observations to become the first television series since ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus’ to be widely described as post-modern. For example, one episode is set in the reception of a Chinese restaurant where three of the main characters are waiting for a table. Set in real-time, the humour of the episode is driven by the increasing desperation of the characters waiting for a table, as they’re meant to go to the cinema afterwards, as well as the neurotic obsessions about their personal lives discussed while waiting.

The main characters themselves were four thirty-something singles: Jerry, George, Kramer and Elaine, with no roots, vague identities and a conscious indifference to morals. They would often involve themselves in the lives of others, typically with disastrous results. However, despite the damage caused, they never grew from their experiences and continued to be egotistical, self-centered people. This notion was completely at odds with other US sitcoms at the time, which would often end with a lesson on morals. Regardless of this, audiences were attracted by the dialogue and the somewhat absurd and neurotic approach to everyday situations and conflicts that the characters would find themselves in.

From season 4 onwards, the show reached meteoric levels of success and by the end of its 9 year run was the most viewed show in the US, with 75 million viewers tuning in for the series finale. All the actors on the show became identified with their characters to the general public. This was a new level of success for the hitherto unknown actors, especially Jerry, who became the first person to get a Black AmEx credit card and even appeared on the cover of Time Magazine when he announced the end of production for the show.

Though fans and critics would have liked Seinfeld to continue, by finishing on a high note Seinfeld avoided jumping the shark like so many of its contemporaries, and left an untarnished legacy that would go on to influence other successful and critically acclaimed shows like ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ and ‘Arrested Development’.

A Review of Scott Washburn’s Novel "Pathfinder"

Barb Carges asked:

David Dysinger is a 23rd century scientist who dreams of traveling to the stars. After years of sending out and analyzing faster then light probes, he and his team are ready to build the first FTL starship. The problem is getting the money and backing to build such a ship. Neither the scientific community nor the government are interested in star travel. The majority of people on Earth spend most of their lives wired into their computers, living in virtual reality. The governments of Earth are only interested in keeping the wire heads happily ensconced in their virtual worlds while they run the real world. The only people interested in star travel are the spacers, free thinking individuals who live aboard the orbiting space stations and supplying the power needed by Earth.

Backed by the Spacers and the only privately owned station, David and his team pursue their dream . For them this project is a scientific adventure. What none of them realize is that Earth’s leaders see their adventure as a threat. A threat that has to be stopped. But sabotage, lies, and murder will not stop the crew of Pathfinder.

“Pathfinder” is Mr. Washburn’s second novel. His first novel “War Among the Ruins” is an excellent piece of military science fiction. “Pathfinder” is also excellent science fiction but less in the style of Weber and more in the style of Bradbury or Wells.

Both “Pathfinder” and “War Among the Ruins” are published by Stellar Phoenix and can be purchased through Amazon.com.
